How do we begin to engage the next generation of young Veterans?
As America’s veteran population continues to age, it opens up new generations to life after service.
The old ways of promoting the services the VSC offers are becoming less effective with younger audiences, allowing us an opportunity to create a new strategy aimed at young veterans.

How do we make it easier for Veterans to access assistance?
In an unprecedented era of technology, and misinformation, it’s more important now than ever to provide accessible, reliable, and trustworthy sources to people in need.
Updating important literature, forms, and websites, while providing new sources of reliable information is key to long-term brand success and stability.
Accessibility Updates
While working at the Veterans Service Commission, I was able to suggest and implement multiple changes aimed at making it easier for elderly and middle-aged veterans to access critical resources and assistance.
These changes have been positively received, allowing Veterans of all abilities equal access to support resources created and/or hosted by the VSC.
All updates helped bring the Veterans Service Commission in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1.

The PACT Act is one of the most prominent pieces of legislation used in claims processing. The PACT Act flier is the single most used piece of literature at the VSC, however, it was not up to ADA standards. I redesigned the entire document within Adobe InDesign, creating a new streamlined layout, a bolder design, and all accessibility requirements from WCAG 2.1.

When someone needs assistance from the Veterans Service Commission, they have to call 9/10 times, even for simple questions. I pitched the creation of a series of tutorial videos for VSC services and FAQs, allowing users of all abilities access to important information and step-by-step guides. Available embedded on the website, and on YouTube, these tutorials will decrease call volumes, while allowing easy access from any location.

Using analytics from GA4, I made several recommendations for changes to the layout, design, and wording on the Veterans Service Commission website. While limited in ability to make widespread alterations due to County requirements, I was able to make several changes that significantly lessened the time it takes to access critical digital resources.

What updates need to be made to modernize the Veterans Service Commission’s online presence?
Not all government websites are updated as regularly as commercial websites, making it difficult for meaningful design changes.
During this rework, I was able to suggest and implement multiple changes to the layout and design, using data to support my actions. These changes make it easier and faster for veterans to access critical resources and links.

How do we inform unaware County EMS employees of our services?
Not all police officers, paramedics, and county employees know about the Veterans Service Commission and its support systems.
The VSC doesn’t just provide VA claims assistance, they also work with the County Courts to keep veterans out of jail, provide safe living accommodations for unhoused veterans, and work with community policing initiatives to prevent unnecessary escalation between law enforcement officers and veterans.
All of these services need attention-grabbing and informative training programs, designed to prepare EMS employees for future interactions with veterans in the community.
